The task

The residents of a small town were woken by the cries for help of a man stuck in the narrow display window of a jewellery shop.

Model answer, 207 words

The events took place last Saturday morning at around 9:30 a.m. Marc, 34, was found stuck in the display window of a jewellery store on Phillips Street. In fact, residents heard his cries for help as he desperately tried to get out of the narrow space he had squeezed into.

To the surprise of passers-by, jewellery from the L’Éclat Doré shop lay scattered across the floor, knocked loose by the impact. The man in his thirties, visibly panicked, had tried to slip in quietly through a side opening. He later explained that he had squeezed inside thinking he could make a quick getaway, but his bag had caught and left him unable to move. The passers-by, at first in disbelief, called the police.

However, according to police findings, there was no one else at the scene of the incident or in the immediate vicinity. They have reportedly begun gathering witness statements to determine whether he acted alone or with an accomplice. It would be essential for the investigation to reconstruct the events accurately.

« Bien que l’incident ne semble pas être de nature violente, je suis fermement convaincu que nous retrouverons toutes les personnes impliquées dans les prochains jours », a déclaré le chef de la police lors d’un entretien avec notre journal.“Although the incident does not appear to have been violent in nature, I am firmly convinced that we will find everyone involved in the coming days,” the police chief said in an interview with our newspaper.

The task

In 50 years, nobody will read books any more and nobody will write correctly.

Model answer, 301 words

I am writing in response to your article published on January 8, in which you stated that “in 50 years, nobody will read books any more and nobody will write correctly”. As a specialist in education and technology, although I understand your concerns, I do not entirely share your vision, and I would like to explain why in what follows:

First of all, we must not forget that books have a unique place in human culture. In fact, even with the rise of digital technologies, books continue to feed the imagination, enrich vocabulary and preserve invaluable knowledge. As proof, sales of print books have increased in recent years, which shows that reading remains rooted in our habits.

Next, it is an exaggeration to think that correct writing will disappear completely. Certainly, the use of technology can lead to a certain slackening in the form of writing, but many educational platforms and grammar-checking apps make it possible precisely to maintain a high level of language mastery. For example, schools and universities continue to value learning traditional writing.

Furthermore, there is a trend showing that, on the contrary, digitalization encourages the emergence of new forms of writing. According to a study carried out by the University of Paris, nearly 40% of young adults consider that digital writing has enriched the way they express ideas in a concise and modern manner.

In conclusion, for the three reasons mentioned above, I remain convinced that, even in 50 years, books will still have their place and that correct writing, in one form or another, will endure. Nevertheless, I would be curious to know what future generations think about this subject.

Yours faithfully,

Nicolas Dubois
