HOW IS THE TEF LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST ASSESSED?
How the score is calculated
- 1 point per correct answer. Every question counts the same.
- Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer or a blank.
- Your score is converted into a level, on the CEFR scale (A1–C2) and on the CLB / NCLC scale used by Canadian immigration.
Each skill is scored separately, and your weakest one sets your profile.
The score thresholds per level are set by IRCC and can be revised: the current chart is below, and canada.ca remains the authority.
What is actually being tested
1. Finding explicit information
- A time, a price, a number, a place or a date given aloud
- Matching a recording to a picture or a situation
2. Identifying the situation and the intent
- Who is speaking to whom, and why: to complain, apologise, offer, decline, reassure
- Recognising register: formal, informal, professional
3. Understanding the implicit
- Catching reluctance, irony, or a polite refusal never phrased as a refusal
- Understanding a qualified opinion: "in favour, but only if…"
4. Following extended speech
- Keeping the thread of an interview or a debate
- Telling apart the views of several speakers on one topic
- Retaining enough to answer two questions on the same extract
CEFR Level Expectations
A2
- Understand short, slow, clearly articulated messages on concrete topics
- Pick out explicit information: a price, a time, a place
B1
- Understand an everyday conversation at normal speed on a familiar topic
- Follow an announcement or a service message
- Identify the topic and main intent of an exchange
B2 (the level most candidates are aiming for)
- Understand an interview or debate on an abstract topic
- Tell a qualified opinion from a categorical one
- Understand a fast speaker, with elision and liaison
- Follow a long extract without losing the thread
C1
- Understand long, loosely structured speech, even on an unfamiliar topic
- Perceive irony, implication and shifts of register
- Understand a range of regional accents
C2
- Understand any spoken French without effort, live or recorded
- Catch nuances of tone, humour and cultural implication
The three traps that cost the most points
The word you heard. An option containing a word spoken in the recording is often the trap. The TEF deliberately places that word in the wrong answer.
Reading the question too late. Reading during the audio means losing the audio. Read it beforehand, always.
The two-question extract. If you only read the first question, the second is lost before it starts. Spot these extracts and read both at once.
TEF Canada score to CLB level

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 and above | 371+ | 298+ | 248+ | 371+ |
| 8 | 349-370 | 280-297 | 233-247 | 349-370 |

C1
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 et plus | 371+ | 298+ | 248+ | 371+ |
| 8 | 349-370 | 280-297 | 233-247 | 349-370 |
| 7 | 310-348 | 249-279 | 207-232 | 310-348 |
