The task
After years at school spent hearing the other students’ taunts, a 30-year-old man won everyone’s admiration at a school reunion.

The events took place last Saturday morning at around 9:30 a.m. Bruno, 31, received a standing ovation at a school reunion held in a municipal hall on Phillips Street. In fact, he surprised everyone by taking the floor to describe the path he had taken since high school, which had been marked by years of mockery and exclusion.
To the surprise of his former classmates and teachers, a video produced by Élan Social, the company he now runs, was shown, featuring his work in support of inclusion in schools. The man in his thirties, once reserved and often left on the margins, explained that he now uses his experience to support young victims of bullying. At school, he often spent his days alone, and his talents went unnoticed by most.
However, according to the main organizer’s observations, several well-known former students were not present at the event. They may have wanted to avoid a potentially uncomfortable moment. The teachers would have preferred a group discussion to take place, so that everyone could express their regrets and the tensions of the past could be laid to rest.
« Bien que la réunion n’ait pas été prévue pour évoquer ces souvenirs douloureux, je suis fermement convaincu qu’elle a permis une prise de conscience collective », a déclaré un ancien professeur lors d’un entretien avec notre journal.“Although the reunion was not planned as a time to bring up these painful memories, I am firmly convinced that it led to a collective awakening,” a former teacher said in an interview with our newspaper.
Look at how it is built:
- The first paragraph answers when, where, who and what.
- The middle adds new facts the prompt did not give.
- It ends on a quote from someone who was there, a common way to close a news story.
Section B: argue a point of view
You get a statement and argue for or against it, with examples.
The task
You have to live alone to become a responsible adult.

I am writing in response to your article published on January 8, in which you stated that “you have to live alone to become a responsible adult”. As a psychologist specializing in personal development, although I understand your reasoning, I do not entirely share your point of view, and I would like to explain why in what follows:
First of all, we should not overlook the fact that living alone can indeed develop a sense of autonomy and self-management. In fact, when a person lives alone, they must manage their finances, their schedule and their household responsibilities on their own. As proof, a study conducted in France showed that nearly 60% of young adults believe their financial independence was strengthened by their experience of living alone.
Next, it is important to stress that one can become responsible in different ways, and that the social environment also plays a crucial role. Certainly, living alone is not the only way to learn to take on one’s responsibilities. For example, in this regard, the figures indicate that approximately 80% of young adults who have lived in shared housing feel just as responsible and autonomous in their professional and personal lives.
Furthermore, there are people who, even while living alone, may have difficulty organizing themselves and managing their daily lives. According to a survey conducted in 2023 of 150 young adults, only 45% say they feel more responsible after living alone for a year.
In conclusion, for the three reasons mentioned above, I remain convinced that although living alone can help develop certain skills, it is not a prerequisite for becoming a responsible adult. Nevertheless, I would be interested to see more in-depth studies on the impact of shared housing on personal development.
Yours faithfully,
Nicolas Dubois
